Arthur Fery named Team Europe alternate for London Laver Cup

British No. 1 Arthur Fery has been called up as an alternate for Team Europe at the Laver Cup, set for this weekend at London's O2 arena. The 24-year-old will practice with the team and be available to play in case of injury or withdrawal.
Fery, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in July and recently led Great Britain to a Davis Cup victory over Ecuador, expressed his pride at the selection. "It's an honour to be part of Team Europe at Laver Cup, especially here at home in London," Fery said. He added that he looked forward to learning from the world's best players.
Team Europe and World Rosters
The primary Team Europe squad for the event consists of six players. Team World has also named an alternate, Peruvian world No. 35 Ignacio Buse, to support its six-man lineup.
Brandon Nakashima joined Team World as a replacement for US Open finalist Ben Shelton, who withdrew last week.
Historical Context for London
This marks the second time the Laver Cup has been held in London. The previous edition at The O2 in 2022 was notable as Roger Federer's final professional match. That year, three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray competed for Team Europe.
The 2024 event is the ninth Laver Cup overall since the tournament began in Prague in 2017. Team Europe won the first four competitions, but Team World has claimed victory in three of the last four editions.
Alternates Embrace the Experience
Like Fery, Team World alternate Ignacio Buse highlighted the unique opportunity the event presents. "Laver Cup is a historic event and I'm very excited to be part of it," Buse stated. He noted the chance to learn from great players and icons, including coach Andre Agassi.
Both alternates emphasized their readiness to support their teams from the bench while absorbing the atmosphere of the team competition.
