Samuel, Fery Lead GB to 2-0 Davis Cup Lead Over Ecuador

Toby Samuel fought back from a set down to win his Davis Cup debut, putting Great Britain ahead against Ecuador. Arthur Fery then secured a straight-sets victory to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five qualifying tie at London's sold-out Copper Box Arena.

Samuel, ranked 95th in the world, admitted the occasion caught him off guard. It's a completely new experience for me playing Davis Cup and it definitely caught me off guard how much it meant to me going out there for my first time, he told reporters 24-year-old said it felt like a bigger deal than playing any Grand Slam tournament.

Samuel's Debut Comeback

Samuel's debut got off to a difficult start. Ecuador's Andres Andrade, ranked 203rd, won the first four games and took the opening set 6-4. Samuel recovered, narrowly winning a tight second set before dominating the decider. He dropped just one game in the final set, which lasted 28 minutes, to complete a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

"This was a big dream of mine and you could sort of tell because I got a bit nervous at the start," Samuel said in an on-court interview. He was only called into the team on Friday after British number two Cameron Norrie withdrew with an arm injury. Samuel has climbed from outside the world's top 250 to 95th in the past nine months.

Fery Extends the Lead

British number one Arthur Fery then faced Alvaro Guillen Meza. Fery, now ranked 36th following a semi-final run at Wimbledon and a final in Winston-Salem, was pushed hard in a compelling first set. He eventually claimed it 7-5 after an hour of play. His quality then became overwhelming as he won the next eight games in a row, sealing the second set 6-0 for a 7-5, 6-0 win.

Fery expressed his joy at playing for the team in front of a home crowd. We're used to travelling alone the whole year and coming out as a team in front of all you of you guys today in London is unbelievable, he said. He added that representing his country made it easy to maintain motivation during a relentless tennis schedule.

Path to the Finals

The tie now hinges on Sunday's doubles match. Henry Patten and Neal Skupski can secure Britain's victory and a place in the knockout stage with a win. If they lose, Fery and Samuel will return to court for the reverse singles matches to try and clinch the tie.

Great Britain is attempting to reach the Davis Cup Finals for the first time since 2023. The seven winners from this weekend's qualifying ties will join defending champions Italy in the Finals in Bologna from November 24 to 29. Austria and South Korea already secured their quarter-final spots on Saturday with victories over Belgium and India, respectively.
