Katie Boulter suffers worst grand slam loss at US Open

British number one Katie Boulter suffered the heaviest grand slam defeat of her career, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Karolina Muchova in just 58 minutes at the US Open. The second-round match was moved under the roof of Louis Armstrong Stadium due to heavy rain disrupting the tournament schedule for a second consecutive day.

Boulter started brightly, breaking Muchova's serve in the opening game and earning another break point in the Czech player's second service game. However, the momentum shifted decisively. Muchova, this year's Wimbledon runner-up, took complete control, winning the next twelve games in a row.

A Bruising Defeat

The statistics from the match underscore the one-sided nature of the contest. Boulter failed to hold her serve throughout the entire match.

Boulter committed 21 unforced errors and managed only four winners during the brief encounter. The loss marks a significant setback for the 30-year-old Briton at Flushing Meadows.

Rain Delays and Other British Hopes

The wet weather in New York also affected the schedule for another British player, Jan Choinski. His first-round match was postponed, allowing him to reach the tournament's fourth day. However, his participation ended there with a straight-sets defeat.

Choinski was beaten 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (5) by Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in a match lasting just under two hours. The 30-year-old, who is coached by his girlfriend Sophia, described the challenge. "She always tries to help me, tries to keep me positive, for sure," Choinski said. "In the first set it was quite good, I had some chances but from that point it got tough."

While reaching the first Wednesday is often an achievement for British players at the US Open, Choinski's progress was solely due to the rain delay. Several other players had already advanced to the third round by the time his match was played.

The early exits of Boulter and Choinski conclude the British interest in the singles draws at this stage of the tournament.
