The tennis world is reeling after Australian player Nick Kyrgios revealed on Instagram that he had tested positive for cocaine, leading to a provisional suspension from the sport.

Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, made the announcement on his social media platform, stating that he had "made a huge mistake" and taking full responsibility for his actions. The 31-year-old player revealed that he had tested positive while competing at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca in June.

The presence of cocaine in Kyrgios's system was confirmed by tests at a World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) laboratory last month. Under ITIA regulations, provisional suspensions are mandatory for positive tests for cocaine, although Kyrgios has the right of appeal.

Kyrgios expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he was sorry to his fans, family, sponsors, and everyone close to him. He also acknowledged the impact his behavior may have on young fans, saying that he was "deeply disappointed in myself."

The tennis star also provided context for his actions, citing the toll that injuries had taken on him over the past couple of years. He stated that he had struggled to come to terms with the end of his career, feeling helpless and alone at times.

However, Kyrgios also used the opportunity to express a desire to move forward and improve himself. He announced that he would be stepping away from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on getting himself right.

The ITIA has confirmed an unspecified provisional suspension for Kyrgios, with the length of the suspension to be determined by whether the substance was taken in or out of competition.

| **Tennis Players and Cocaine Suspensions** | | --- | | **Player** | **Ban Length** | | Dan Evans | 12 months | | Kasigo Rabada | 3 months (reduced to 1 month with rehabilitation) |

It's worth noting that Wada rules have changed since Dan Evans's 2017 ban, stipulating a three-month suspension for out of competition offences. This ban can be reduced to one month if the athlete agrees to undertake an approved programme of rehabilitation.

Kyrgios's suspension is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the tennis star, who has been a polarizing figure throughout his career. Despite his past achievements, including a 2022 Wimbledon final defeat to Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios's recent injuries have restricted his appearances, and he has not played in a grand slam since the 2025 Australian Open.

In recent years, Kyrgios has struggled to maintain his form, and his behavior has been the subject of much scrutiny. However, in his latest statement, he expressed a desire to move forward and improve himself, both on and off the court.
