Ben Shelton cemented his status as a rising star in men’s tennis by winning his second ATP Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open. The fifth-seeded American defeated fellow countryman Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 (4) in Montreal, becoming only the fourth player this century to win back-to-back Canadian Open titles. Shelton, who first claimed the championship in Toronto last year, joins an elite group that includes Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic.

Shelton’s victory was a testament to his mental resilience and consistent performance throughout the tournament. He dominated the opening set, breaking Nakashima’s serve twice to secure a 33-minute win. The second set was a tighter affair, with neither player facing a break point until the tiebreaker, where Shelton capitalized on Nakashima’s serve to close out the match.

Nakashima, seeded 28th, has yet to secure a Masters 1000 title, with his only tour victory coming in San Diego in 2022. His loss to Shelton extends his losing streak against the American to 0-6.

## Cincinnati Open Kicks Off with Early Upsets

The Cincinnati Open began with rain delays but still saw several notable first-round results. Britain’s Cameron Norrie staged a comeback to defeat Croatia’s Dino Prizmic 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Despite trailing in winners (25-14), Norrie capitalized on Prizmic’s unforced errors and secured crucial breaks in the second and third sets.

Norrie’s next challenge will be top-seeded Alexander Zverev, setting up a potential second-round showdown. Meanwhile, Spain’s Martin Landaluce ended a six-match losing streak by defeating Britain’s Jack Draper 6-3, 7-5. Landaluce, who had fewer winners but significantly fewer unforced errors, credited his belief in his game for the victory.

Other first-round winners included Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, Argentina’s Mariano Navone, and France’s Terence Atmane, who advanced when Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics retired.
