Tennis: Draper's Comeback Effort Cut Short by Injury

Jack Draper's highly anticipated comeback to the tennis court was met with a heartbreaking defeat at the Canadian Open. The 24-year-old Briton, who had been struggling with a persistent arm injury, took France's Terence Atmane to three sets before recurring discomfort forced him to concede. Draper's return to the court was his first since June, and he received a main-draw wildcard at the tournament in Montreal. His world ranking had plummeted from fourth to as low as 160th in a 12-month period due to the injury, which had caused him to pull out of scheduled comebacks at Wimbledon and the Washington Open this summer. Despite initial nerves, Draper appeared to be in good spirits, smiling by the third game as he read a tricky Atmane serve well and pulled off an unlikely winner to delight the crowd. He showed glimpses of his former form, executing a powerful cross-court forehand in the second set that left the Montreal crowd in awe. However, a different Draper returned for the third set, surrendering the opening game having led 40-15. He appeared frustrated in the fourth game when he passed up a gift of a break point, firing a tired forehand into the net. After being broken for 4-1 in the next, Draper sat down during a change of ends and was overcome with emotion, wiping tears from his eyes. Atmane went on to serve out the match and will face Russian Karen Khachanov in the second round. Draper's involvement in the Cincinnati Open, which starts next week, is now in doubt, and his participation in the US Open, which begins on 23 August, is also uncertain. Draper's partner in the mixed doubles competition, Jessica Pegula, expressed concern for his health, stating that his well-being should be the top priority. "I know he's been really struggling a bit with some injuries and I saw he had a really tough day with his match," Pegula said. "We're supposed to play [the US Open]. Obviously I know he's not healthy, so we'll see how that goes." The incident raises questions about Draper's ability to compete at the highest level, and his future in the sport is now uncertain.
