De Minaur powers Australia to Davis Cup lead over Poland

Alex de Minaur delivered a commanding performance to put Australia 1-0 ahead in their must-win Davis Cup tie against Poland in Brisbane. The world number nine defeated Poland's Maks Kasnikowski 6-3, 6-0 in a match that lasted only 56 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Pat Rafter Arena.

De Minaur, seeking form after a second-round exit at the US Open, was in complete control. He lost a mere six points in the entire second set. The Australian number one found his range on serve, created sharp angles from the baseline, and closed points decisively at the net.

A dominant display

The Australian broke serve for the first time in the fourth game, letting out a roar of celebration. He steadied after a tight line call went against him later in the set, responding with back-to-back aces. Kasnikowski saved two set points on his own serve, forcing de Minaur to serve out the opener, which he did comfortably. An immediate break at the start of the second set set the tone for a one-sided conclusion.

De Minaur credited the home crowd for fueling his performance. "That's what these ties are all about; get fired up, get the crowd involved and there's no better feeling," he said. He added that playing in front of a packed Australian arena was a feeling he had missed during the long tour season abroad.

Opponent overwhelmed

For Kasnikowski, ranked 231st in the world, it was a daunting first encounter with a top-10 player. "It was a unique experience. A really, really tough challenge and happy I put up a little bit of a fight in the first set," the Pole admitted. He stated that de Minaur significantly raised his level in the second set, playing faster and making no errors, which proved too much to handle.

The tie continues

The action in Brisbane continues with the second singles match, featuring local favorite James Duckworth against Poland's Kamil Majchrzak. The doubles and reverse singles matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Australia's progression in the competition hinges on winning this tie. The team suffered an upset loss in Ecuador earlier this year. A victory here is required to advance to next year's qualifying round, which offers a pathway to the eight-team finals in Italy this November.
