The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has selected Charlotte, North Carolina, as the new host city for its season-ending WTA Finals, starting in 2027. The three-year agreement aims to bring stability to an event that has had six different hosts in the past seven years.
WTA chair Valerie Camillo stated the tour is taking greater operational control of the Finals to manage its own destiny. "The WTA has always owned the WTA Finals, but now we are going to operate it, too," Camillo said. She explained this move allows the organization to control revenue creation and expenses directly.
Recent Hosting Instability
The event has struggled to find a permanent home. A planned 10-year tenure in Shenzhen concluded after just one edition. Since then, the Finals have been held in Guadalajara, Fort Worth, Cancun, and Riyadh, often drawing disappointing crowds. Riyadh's arrangement ended a year early, partly due to geopolitical instability and waning interest from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
This year's edition will be held in Indian Wells, California, serving as a transitional event before the move to Charlotte. The WTA acknowledged financial pressures for 2026, citing the unexpected cost of relocating to Indian Wells and necessary belt-tightening.
Venue and Format Adjustments
In Charlotte, the tournament will be held at the Spectrum Centre, the home arena of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. This venue choice presents a scheduling challenge, as the basketball season will be in full swing next November. Consequently, the event will be condensed from eight days to five due to the frequency of NBA home games, a change likely to affect revenue.
Camillo confirmed the WTA has begun discussions with players about exploring alternative formats. If the current round-robin group stage format is retained, finalists could face the prospect of playing matches every day during the shortened schedule.
Financial Context and Future
Prize money for the Charlotte Finals has not yet been announced. For context, the total purse for this year's Finals in Indian Wells is set at $10 million. This is $5.5 million less than the prize fund offered by Saudi Arabia for last year's event.
Despite the shorter event duration in Charlotte, Camillo expressed confidence in the long-term plan. She stated the WTA has a clear path to deliver consistent, sustainable financial performance from 2027 onward, supported by anticipated revenue and audience growth. As part of the broader agreement, the WTA will also relocate its global headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Charlotte.
