Zverev Completes Grand Slam Quarterfinal Set at US Open

Alexander Zverev secured his 50th win of the season and a place in the US Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory over 21st seed Luciano Darderi. The German top seed is now the only man to have reached the quarterfinal stage at all four Grand Slam tournaments this year, a season that already includes his first major title at Roland-Garros.

This marks Zverev's fifth US Open quarterfinal, making him the sixth active male player to achieve that feat at the event. He completed the men's last eight, which also features Karen Khachanov and Alexander Blockx, the first Belgian man ever to reach this stage in New York.

Zverev's Path and the Final Eight

Zverev's fourth-round win closed a match that spanned Monday night into Tuesday. Earlier this season, Darderi, ranked 22nd, had saved four match points to beat Zverev in Rome. The Italian's path to the fourth round included wins over qualifier Harry Wendelken, Dalibor Svrcina, and wildcard Dane Sweeny. Zverev's own journey featured two five-set battles against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys, alongside a straight-sets win over Alejandro Tabilo.

Blockx Makes History Through Pain

Alexander Blockx battled through a rib injury to defeat 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, becoming the first Belgian man to reach a US Open quarterfinal. The 21-year-old, seeded 28th, is also the youngest Belgian man in the Open era to reach a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal, achieving this on his main-draw debut in New York and in his first tournament as a Grand Slam seed.

"Physically it was a real battle today on court," Blockx said. "I was struggling a lot with my rib, especially while serving." He explained that medication from the doctor helped him serve normally again by the fourth set. His run to the last 16 included a win over fifth seed Flavio Cobolli.

Cerundolo, ranked 25th, remains winless in four Grand Slam fourth-round appearances. He had previously come from two sets down to beat Taylor Fritz.

Khachanov Rallies Past Tien

Karen Khachanov came from two sets to one down to defeat American 14th seed Learner Tien 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4 in a match lasting just under four hours. The unseeded Russian, now ranked 50th, has reached his seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal and his first at the US Open since a semifinal run four years ago.

Khachanov attributed his comeback to a tactical choice. "It's always a gamble in a way where you step in more, where you take a risk, or you decide to play more safe," he stated. He praised Tien as a "super talented guy" who made incredible gets. The 20-year-old Tien's defeat meant the tournament will have three American men in the quarterfinals, not the four that would have been a first since 1995.

Khachanov's earlier wins included an upset over third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Tien had beaten 17th seed Jakub Mensik and wildcard Gael Monfils to reach the fourth round.
