The Cincinnati Open has seen its first major upset, as Novak Djokovic suffered a shocking defeat to Thiago Agustín Tirante.

Djokovic, the world's top-ranked player, was struggling to cope with the humidity from the second set onwards. He spent much of his time between points squatting and bending over as he desperately tried to catch his breath. Despite his efforts, he was eventually dispatched 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 by the 25-year-old Argentinian.

Djokovic has long insisted that grand slam tournaments and Olympics are his priority, and his results have reflected this reality. He has failed to reach the quarter-finals in any of the non-grand slam tournaments he has participated in this season, compiling a 2-3 record.

Tirante, on the other hand, remained strong throughout the match, using his serve and potent forehand to force Djokovic behind the baseline. The world No 50 now holds a 4-1 record against top 10 opponents, a testament to his growing prowess on the court.

After the match, Djokovic explained that his struggles with humidity were due to a health condition that has been bothering him for the last couple of years. He also acknowledged that the tension and pressure of matchplay had made things worse.

Djokovic's preparation for the tournament had been preceded by a promotional tour for his upcoming Amazon Prime documentary. He had decided to compete in Cincinnati in order to give himself some matches before the US Open, but now faces the challenge of finding his feet quickly in New York.

Elsewhere, Arthur Fery made a positive start to his first ever appearance in the Cincinnati Open main draw, defeating James Duckworth 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) and reaching the third round. Fery had opted to take four weeks off after Wimbledon, and this was his first match since his run to the semi-finals at the All England Club.

However, an even greater challenge awaits Fery in round three as he faces the fifth seed, Alex de Minaur. The Australian, who has been struggling to find his form recently, recovered from a set down to defeat the French qualifier Quentin Halys 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

| Player | Score | | --- | --- | | Thiago Agustín Tirante | 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 | | Arthur Fery | 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) | | Alex de Minaur | 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) |

The Cincinnati Open continues, with many more upsets and surprises in store.
