Novak Djokovic lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. The 39-year-old, 24-time Grand Slam champion fell 6-4, 6-3 in an 87-minute match that marked his earliest-ever exit at the tournament. This defeat ended Djokovic's 34-match winning streak and came just three days after he won the China Open in Beijing.

Quick turnaround after China Open title

Djokovic's loss in Shanghai followed a demanding title run in Beijing. He had just claimed his 102nd career title at the China Open, ending an 11-month wait for a trophy. His path to that victory was arduous. Djokovic played six matches in nine days, defeating three top-10 players along the way. He beat world-number-two Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinal and led third seed Daniil Medvedev before Medvedev was defaulted in the semifinal. Alex de Minaur retired injured in the final, handing Djokovic the title. The Beijing win marked his 21st consecutive year winning a tour-level singles title. After that effort, he travelled directly to Shanghai to face Hurkacz.

Hurkacz breaks through against Djokovic

World number 34 Hubert Hurkacz secured his first career victory over Djokovic. He had lost all eight of their previous meetings. Hurkacz broke serve once in each set to seal the straight-sets win. In his post-match press conference, Hurkacz noted that Djokovic was struggling a bit physically. He said Djokovic had an amazing week in Beijing and that it was not easy to recover after just a few days. Hurkacz praised his own aggressive serving in the important moments, which helped him outperform Djokovic in almost every relevant metric during the match.

Impact on Djokovic's ATP Finals qualification

The Shanghai loss has direct consequences for Djokovic's season goals. His Beijing win had boosted his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. He currently occupies the final qualification spot, sitting ninth in the race. His position is not secure. Others still competing in the Shanghai draw could earn points and push him further down the list. Djokovic will now need a strong showing at the Paris Masters in November to reach the required top-eight ranking and secure his ATP Finals spot.

Djokovic's immediate schedule and future plans

Djokovic does not plan to return to the ATP Tour until the Paris Masters. The main draw there starts on November 2. This gives him a 25-day break after his Shanghai exit. After participating in the Six Kings Slam exhibition and the Paris Masters, Djokovic hopes to play in the ATP Finals in Turin if he qualifies. He skipped the year-end championships in 2024 and 2025 but intends to play in 2026 should he earn a place. The 2026 ATP Finals are scheduled to begin on Sunday, November 15. Djokovic will have a 25-day break after Shanghai before the Paris Masters main draw starts on November 2.
