Daniil Medvedev was defaulted from the China Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic on Monday after a ball he hit struck a spectator in the face. The incident occurred when Medvedev, trailing 7-5, 5-3, swiped at a ball in annoyance after it ricocheted off the back wall following a point loss. The ball flew into the air and hit a spectator sitting in the front row, who doubled over clutching his left eye in apparent pain. The fan was later helped out of the arena by stadium staff, still holding his face.

Medvedev, 30, immediately spoke with umpire Mohamed Lahyani and an ATP official. The offence was deemed serious enough for an instant default, ending an excellent contest. The Russian world No. 5 forfeited all ranking points and prize money from the Beijing event, a run that would have returned him to the world's top five.

Reactions from players

Both players expressed immediate concern for the spectator's wellbeing. "Terribly sorry to the spectator, first of all," Medvedev said. He added that he was trying to get in touch with the fan to apologise in person. Medvedev described the incident as a complete accident, stating he had tried to hit the ball anywhere to prevent it from going out of court. He said he felt horrible after seeing the result.

Djokovic, who advances to the final by walkover, also showed sympathy. "It's a bit of a shock to be honest. I hope that person is not badly injured," the 39-year-old said. He expressed feeling sorry for Medvedev, noting he understood how it felt to be disqualified in a big match. Djokovic stated he was sure his opponent had not acted intentionally.

Consequences of the default

The default carries significant sporting and financial penalties for Medvedev. He loses all points and prize money from his China Open campaign. This abrupt end also halted his momentum in a match where Djokovic had played superbly, saving 16 of the 18 break points he faced.

The incident adds to Medvedev's history of on-court conduct issues. Earlier this year, he was fined $7,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct after smashing his racket seven times during a 6-0, 6-0 loss in Monte Carlo. Last year, he was fined almost £31,500 for a meltdown at the US Open.

Context and history

Defaults in professional tennis are rare, occurring only for serious violations of the code of conduct like ball abuse. The situation echoed Novak Djokovic's own default at the 2020 US Open for hitting a line judge. Players can typically receive three code violations before disqualification, but serious incidents warrant an instant default.

Medvedev has acknowledged his struggles with on-court temperament. He has said that his intense desire to win brings out adrenaline and energy, which sometimes manifests negatively. The Russian, a three-time Australian Open finalist and the 2021 US Open champion, is described as a combustible character who has worked to control his emotions throughout his career.

Meanwhile, Djokovic moves on to his first final since the Australian Open. He will face Alex de Minaur on Tuesday, seeking a record-extending seventh China Open title. De Minaur advanced when his semi-final opponent, Hubert Hurkacz, retired injured. Djokovic has won at least one tour-level title every year since 2006.
