The Shanghai Masters produced two significant upsets on Tuesday, reshaping both the tournament draw and the season-ending rankings race. Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs stunned world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, while Frenchman Arthur Gea continued his dream run by reaching the quarterfinals on his first-ever Masters 1000 appearance.

Bergs shocks Alcaraz

Zizou Bergs, ranked 39th, defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6(4) in a match lasting over two hours at the Shanghai Masters. The victory is the biggest of the Belgian's career and marks only the second time this year Alcaraz has lost to a player ranked outside the top 20.

Bergs saved his best tennis for the key moments. He lost a break advantage in both sets but held his nerve, winning 79% of his first-service points and hitting 24 winners. After the match, Bergs described a feeling of disbelief. "It's a level of disbelief and not feeling too much," he said. The win represents a major step forward for Bergs, who had previously beaten top-10 players Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime. He now believes he can truly compete with the sport's elite. Bergs faces either Tommy Paul or Valentin Vacherot in the next round.

The result had immediate implications for the ATP rankings. With Alcaraz's exit, Alexander Zverev is now guaranteed to finish the season as world No. 1 for the first time. The 29-year-old German will be the oldest first-time year-end No. 1 in history. It's been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true, Zverev stated.

Gea's dream debut continues

Arthur Gea, a 21-year-old French qualifier, beat 13th seed Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4 to advance to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. Ranked 56th, Gea is now assured of making his top-50 debut, rising to at least world No. 44. This victory follows his biggest career win over world No. 4 Ben Shelton in the previous round.

Gea displayed remarkable composure against the Czech. The first set went to a tiebreak without a break of serve, where Gea won six consecutive points after dropping the opener. In the second set, he broke Mensik's serve at 2-2 with a brilliant passing shot. The defeat ended Mensik's 21-match winning streak on hard courts against players ranked outside the top 50. Gea's next opponent will be either Hubert Hurkacz or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Gea's season has been one of rapid ascent. He began the year ranked 241st, qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at the Australian Open, and won his first ATP title in Los Cabos. His run in Shanghai extends his tour-level record since July to 13 wins and only 2 losses. This debut Masters 1000 campaign has firmly announced his arrival among the sport's promising talents.
