Great Britain's BJK Cup run ends in Czech

Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup campaign ended in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic. Captain Anne Keothavong said she could not fault her team's efforts after they were defeated by a strong Czech side featuring two top-10 players.

All five Czech players were ranked higher in singles than any member of the British squad. The result marks the first time since 2023 that Britain has failed to reach the semi-finals of the team competition.

Kartal's gritty return falls short

Sonay Kartal, playing her first match in six months due to a lower back injury, lost a marathon three-hour encounter to Marie Bouzkova. The final score was 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4. Kartal started well against the world number 26 but was broken back immediately after an early lead. Bouzkova dominated the first-set tie-break.

The Briton broke early in the second set to force a decider. Her first double fault of the match handed Bouzkova a break for a 4-2 lead in the third. Kartal saved three match points and broke back to delay defeat, but Bouzkova restored her lead immediately to clinch the victory after exactly three hours on court.

"These events are my favourite, but they also sting the most," said Kartal, whose ranking has dropped to 127th following her injury. "Regardless of how long I've spent off the court, I can look back at that performance and be happy." Keothavong added that Kartal left everything on the court and expressed no regrets about selecting her.

Boulter outplayed by Wimbledon champion

With the Czech Republic leading 1-0, British number one Katie Boulter faced an uphill battle against Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Boulter was outplayed 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) by the world number six. Two double faults in the first game saw Boulter drop serve early. Noskova steamrolled through the opening four games before wrapping up the first set.

Boulter improved in the second set and threatened to force a decider but was unable to create a single break point. Noskova took control of the tie-break to secure the win and send her nation into the semi-finals.

That's what it takes against someone who has won a slam this year and is top 10, Boulter said, according to the BBC report. If I want to play that level, I have to take risks, go for it, not be scared. It was Boulter's second successive loss to a Czech player, following a 58-minute defeat by Karolina Muchova at the US Open three weeks prior.

Czechs advance as title favorites

The Czech Republic, an 11-time winner of the tournament, advanced to face either Kazakhstan or Spain in Friday's semi-finals. They were the only team at the Finals claiming two top-10 players in Noskova and Muchova, this year's Wimbledon finalists.

It was always going to be a tough challenge against the Czechs, said Captain Keothavong. For both these players, it required their absolute best and a bit of luck for the result to go our way. She added that she believed the Czechs were the strongest team at the competition and would be surprised if they did not go on to win it.

Britain's wait for a maiden Billie Jean King Cup title will continue for another year.
