Panna Udvardy has been eliminated in the first round of all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2026. This marks the second time in her career the Hungarian has suffered this unwanted feat.
Udvardy's current Grand Slam struggles stand in stark contrast to the player who handed her a significant defeat last season. Alex Eala beat Udvardy 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the final of the 2025 Guadalajara Open, a WTA 125 event. That match was Eala's first ever WTA final victory.
Udvardy's Career Since the Guadalajara Final
Despite that loss to Eala, Panna Udvardy has found success on the lower-tier circuit. She has won two WTA 125 titles in her career, reaching eight finals at that level. Her first title came on the clay of Buenos Aires, and she later secured a second WTA 125 crown in the same city.
Udvardy has also reached one final on the main WTA Tour. She was runner-up to Marie Bouzkova at a WTA 250 event in Bogota earlier in 2026.
A Persistent Grand Slam Hurdle
This success has not translated to the sport's biggest stages. Udvardy has played 13 Grand Slam main draw matches in her career and has won only one. Her sole victory came at Wimbledon in 2022 against former Roland Garros semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek. She then lost in the second round.
Since that 2022 win, Udvardy has lost 10 consecutive Grand Slam main draw matches. Her ranking fell in 2025, preventing direct entry into any major tournaments, and she was unable to qualify. Improved results later allowed her direct entry again for the 2026 season, but she has been unable to advance past the first round.
Contrasting Paths with Alex Eala
The player who defeated Udvardy in Guadalajara has charted a very different course at the majors. Alex Eala, now a three-time titlist at WTA 125 level or above, has made significant inroads. After winning her first main WTA Tour title at the Washington Open in 2026 by beating Jessica Pegula, Eala carried that form to the Grand Slams.
She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier in 2026 and followed it with a run to the third round of the US Open. Eala and Udvardy have not faced each other since their 2025 final encounter in Mexico.
